Black River Outfitters

A brief history

WHEN BLACKRIVER OUTFITTERS WAS FOUNDED IN 2004, BROTHERS JUAN PABLO (JP) & JOSE IGNACIO (NACHO) PORTELA HAD THEIR DREAMS REALIZED.

Twin brothers Juan Pablo and José Ignacio Portela founded Blackriver Outfitters in 2004 on the banks of Río Negro — and built it into one of South America’s leading wingshooting houses.

JP trained in hotel management in Switzerland; Nacho studied business administration at Universidad ORT in Montevideo and spent his early career in international polo. Together they brought hospitality, sport and business discipline to every camp they built.

In May 2023 the brothers sold the company to Casey Cundieff, staying on as senior advisors. The transition was designed to honor the legacy they had built while opening a new chapter under Cundieff’s leadership.

Today the Portelas oversee a broader portfolio of sporting, tourism and finance ventures — Blackriver among them.

Mix Bag hunting Uruguay

With old-fashioned hard work, dedication to service, attention to details, and a keen knowledge of arguably the finest mixed bag wing shooting real estate anywhere in the world, the Portelas developed Blackriver Outfitters and haven’t looked back since.

NAMED “BLACKRIVER OUTFITTERS” because of the RIO NEGRO COUNTY WHERE THEY GREW UP!.

For nearly sixteen years now, Nacho and JP have owned and operated Blackriver Outfitters. With world class wing shooting in South America as the Portela Brothers main goal, BlackriverOutfitters now operates as one of the best in the area.

Now clients of Blackriver can choose the wing shooting program that best fits their hunting desires.
