Portela brothers
Black River Outfitters
WHEN BLACKRIVER OUTFITTERS WAS FOUNDED IN 2004, BROTHERS JUAN PABLO (JP) & JOSE IGNACIO (NACHO) PORTELA HAD THEIR DREAMS REALIZED.
In May 2023, the Portela brothers, renowned for their successful hunting company, made a pivotal decision that would change the course of their business. After years of building a reputable brand in the hunting industry, they decided to sell their company to Casey Cundieff, an entrepreneur with a vision for growth and innovation.
The Portela brothers had established their company as a leader in the market, known for offering high-quality hunting gear and exceptional guided hunting experiences. They had a loyal customer base and a strong presence in the industry. However, after much deliberation, they felt it was time to transition and explore new opportunities beyond the hunting business.
Casey Cundieff, a seasoned businessman with a passion for outdoor activities, recognized the potential in the Portela brothers’ company. He approached them with a proposal that outlined his plans for revitalizing and expanding the brand. Cundieff’s vision included leveraging modern marketing strategies, enhancing product offerings, and reaching new markets.
The negotiation process was intense, as both parties sought to ensure a fair deal that honored the legacy of the Portela brothers while allowing Cundieff to implement his vision. After weeks of discussions, they reached an agreement, and the sale was finalized.
In a heartfelt farewell, the Portela brothers expressed their gratitude to their employees and customers, emphasizing that they were confident in Cundieff’s ability to take the company to new heights. They left the company with a sense of accomplishment, knowing they had built something special.
As Casey Cundieff took the reins, he began to introduce changes that resonated with both new and existing customers. The company expanded its product line, embraced e-commerce, and initiated community outreach programs, all while maintaining the quality and integrity that the Portela brothers had established.
The sale marked a new chapter for both the Portela brothers and Casey Cundieff. While the brothers ventured into new projects, Cundieff continued to build on their legacy, ensuring that the spirit of adventure and passion for hunting lived on in the company.
The brothers parted ways to attend university: Pablo moved to Switzerland, Caux where he earned a Diploma in hotel Management before traveling the world to gain experience in the hospitality industry at an international level.
Brother Nacho chose to stay closer to home where he attended Universidad ORT Uruguay in Montevideo to study Business Administration.
Like Pablo, Nacho also traveled the world after he completed school for Playing Polo and learn new experiences.
Eventually the two returned home to Uruguay and decided to open a friendly mixed bag hunting and fishing operation in the fields, ponds and rivers which they grew up hunting and fishing and knew so well.
With old-fashioned hard work, dedication to service, attention to details, and a keen knowledge of arguably the finest mixed bag wing shooting real estate anywhere in the world, the Portelas developed Blackriver Outfitters and haven’t looked back since.
NAMED “BLACKRIVER OUTFITTERS” because of the RIO NEGRO COUNTY WHERE THEY GREW UP!.
